CURRENT AVAILABILITY

After a very busy 2023 and having secured an exciting project for the start of 2024, I'm now looking for Client Rep / Party Chief projects from May 1st 2024

PROFILE

I entered the offshore survey world in 2012, following a successful career in the UK Armed Forces (Royal Navy – 9 Years), I gained and strengthened my knowledge and experience in the areas of vessel and personnel safety procedures, risk factors and leadership during this time.

While both employed and freelance as a Geophysical/Geotechnical engineer, I've been able to promote and enforce a positive safety culture within each vessel I've worked on.  This prompted me to further my knowledge and move into the Health & Safety arena by completing a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, after which, I have completed an IMCA/IOGP recognised Client Representative course to instruct and advise from an informed standpoint.

I have recently diverted my efforts towards Offshore Client Rep roles. I'm positive that my engineering background has enabled me to promote HSE from both the contractor and client’s perspective whilst having a clear understanding of how the two safety management systems need to combine, to provide an effective and proactive onboard safety culture.  Having worked my way up from deck level, I have the credibility and the ability to empathise with the crew and still ensure the client's expectations are also reached, if not surpassed.  The empathy I maintain with the crew allows me the ability to Intervene when necessary and engage with the crew members, pointing out procedural measures which need to be adhered to. Constantly ensuring the safety of the operation and building the crew’s morale in the process.

I can assess the behavioural risks involved and ensure the project conforms to both UK HSE and IMCA legislation.

Occupational Health and Safety should always be at the forefront of any Industry.  However, life offshore is inherently dangerous and brings with it a unique need for more stringent health and safety measures.  I believe that my experience at sea, both in the Royal Navy and in the offshore energy sector provides an equally unique perspective, whilst having a firm approach of safety first.

I tend to be a logical and organised person whilst having the flexibility to diversify as the project dictates in a timely and efficient manner.

My aim for 2023 (my fifth year as an independent consultant engaged offshore on major projects), is to seek assignments which will engage my HSE expertise and approachable deminer, enabling me to become a valued Client Rep / HSE Advisor for both the client and those on board the vessel and to continue to develop my HSE qualifications with Membership of IOSH.

Throughout my working life and particularly in the oil and gas and now the renewables industry, experience has taught me:
· The importance of continuously assessing the situation.  Thorough contingency planning is key to a timely completion date.
· By supporting as well as motivating both the team and the individual you will achieve more from them, than if you are dictatorial and obstructive.
· A thorough understanding of each other’s roles and promoting real time co-operation, at all levels, leads to increase levels of efficiency and reduces vessel and equipment downtime.

EXPERIENCE / ASSIGNMENTS

Freelance Client Rep/Part Chief & Geophysical Engineer (with USA B1/B2 & C1/D Visa)Deck I/C & Safety Officer

Currently working as a freelance Client Rep/Party Chief with occasional Survey Engineer Projects to keep my skills current. Conducting Geophysical surveys for various companies around the world either in a Supervisory role on behalf of the end client as their representative on board or Party Chief of the Survey, within these roles my duties included but not limited to:

Daily liaison with the Client Rep or Party Chief (Dependant on which role I’m in) to discuss planning for the project together with HSE reporting.Daily meeting with the Captain & Contractors regarding all matters operational and HSE including, unannounced compliance checks and safety observation duties of the work site operations. Safety Coaching Presentations and periodic monitoring and review of JSA’s and RA.Operational procedures review, complacency reduction and fatigue management assessments giving guidance. Daily liaison and permitting compliance notifications including SIMOPS avoidance with other vessels and agencies also working in the survey area including Nord Stream. HSSE reporting to GEOxyz, shore side establishments, ultimately taking total responsibility for the quality and coverage of data for the entire project before DEMOB.Within my roles as a Survey Engineer, I cover Piloting and maintaining Various Scanfish setup’s, SSS, Sparkers, Bang Boxes, SBP and Magnetometers (Gradiometer's/TVG) and Boomers Plates – whilst conducting first level Quality control of Data. As Deck I/C I had the responsibility to ensure the safety of all personnel during deployments and recoveries of equipment, this involved conducting competent toolbox meetings whilst conforming to both MCA and UK HSE Legislation. The Ability to assess the Inherent and behavioural risks involved with working upon a busy survey deck at sea was paramount to ensure the Safety of the crew.

GEOXYZ – PARTY CHIEF

2023 - PARTY CHIEF - Joined the vessel as Party Chief during a particularly busy time. The current plan had over-run by a week or so and we still had several assets to Investigate for the scope of work.

In all there were 4 separate projects ranging from cable crossing verification and OSS platform Inspections to UXO Investigation and determination, so a very wide range of survey operations each with their own kick off meetings, HIRA meetings and vessel planning involved. Added to this was the added scenarios of crew planning and crew changes, not to mention planning pertinent to calibrations of equipment, all of which had to be done in very quick succession.

I found my time on board as Party Chief hugely beneficial from a man management point of view. The workings of a busy vessel are a mean feat to try and accommodate and having this compounded by various projects and clients made for a very good learning experience for me.

Duties included but not limited to:

Daily liaison with the Client rep onboard for four separate clients (50 Hertz/ RTE/Elia/EODC) to discuss planning for project together with HSE reporting.

Daily meeting with the Captain & Contractors (Vriezoo.Bv for ROV & Herman Sr.BV for vessel) regarding all matters operational and HSE including, unannounced compliance checks and safety observation duties of the work site operations.

Safety Coaching Presentations and periodic monitoring and review of JSA’s and RA.

Operational procedures review, complacency reduction and fatigue management assessments giving guidance.  Daily liaison and permitting compliance notifications including SIMOPS avoidance with other vessels and agencies also working in the survey area including Nord Stream.

HSSE reporting to GEOxyz, shore side establishments, ultimately taking total responsibility for the quality and coverage of data for the entire project before DEMOB.

4C OFFSHORE / CLIENT REPRESENTATIVE

  • 2023 4C Offshore – Offshore Client Representative

Joined the project team during the vessel mobilisation to assist in contractor audit close outs and the project briefings to the crew of the vessel. Assisted with QA/QC duties during the in port and offshore calibrations phase and then deployed with the vessel offshore to complete the required SOW.

Duties included but not limited to:

Daily liaison with 4C Offshore, National Grid & Scottish Power Energy via Teams to advise upon progress and quality of the project together with HSE reporting.

Daily meeting with the Captain & Contractors (Tecnoambiante & Hydrafix) regarding all matters operational and HSE including, unannounced compliance checks and safety observation duties of the work site operations.

Safety Coaching Presentations and periodic monitoring and review of JSA’s and RA.

Operational procedures review, complacency reduction and fatigue management assessments giving guidance.

Daily liaison and permitting compliance notifications including SIMOPS avoidance with other vessels and agencies also working in the survey area.

HSSE reporting to 4C Offshore, shore side establishments, ultimately taking total responsibility for the quality and coverage of data for the entire project before DEMOB.
